Butanol: A Superior Renewable Energy Substitute for Gasoline
Oil prices hover close to US $70 a barrel. This higher price drives a lot of research into finding substitutes for petroleum fuels. I have a personal affinity for ethanol myself, in the form of well crafted wines, beers, or whiskies.
Brazil is a fine place to grow sugar cane, which produces bulk ethanol far more efficiently than corn. There is too much coal burning associated with the current ethanol production by the big US farm conglomerates. They do not tell you that.
If cellulosic ethanol pays off, then it will be possible to ferment ethanol from any type of cellulose from stalks, stems, even woody biomass.
We need to get the microbiologists into the act to produce better fermenting microbes and microbes for breaking down cellulose into sugars.
