Graphic Reality: Tracking Relationships over Time

Here is a colorful animation plotting life expectancy in countries against per capita income in dollars US. This is the explanatory tutorial for the animation.

Once you load the chart, you can change either the dependent or independent variable for different comparisons--choose from over fifteen different variables that you can place in either the dependent(vertical) or independent(horizontal) position. The legend at the upper right will flash the countries from any given region. Select an individual country to track its progress on any of the variables.

As for the relationship between life expectancy and percapita income, the blue outliers you see dropping off the lower end of the curve are sub-saharan african nations. Notice the pci horizontal axis is a log scale. Changing the scale to linear alters the shape of the graph significantly.

Play with it for a while until you see what it can do. You may want to bookmark the chart for future use.
