Wiping Out the Human Population of Earth Lovelock: This is the Real Thing Dammit

James Lovelock is the revered, grand old man of doom. Lovelock is quite cheerful about the coming demise of humanity. After all, what has humanity ever done for Lovelock?
Lovelock believes global warming is now irreversible, and that nothing can prevent large parts of the planet becoming too hot to inhabit, or sinking underwater, resulting in mass migration, famine and epidemics. Britain is going to become a lifeboat for refugees from mainland Europe, so instead of wasting our time on wind turbines we need to start planning how to survive. To Lovelock, the logic is clear. The sustainability brigade are insane to think we can save ourselves by going back to nature;....But he fears we won't invent the necessary technologies in time, and expects "about 80%" of the world's population to be wiped out by 2100. Prophets have been foretelling Armageddon since time began, he says. "But this is the real thing."

Faced with two versions of the future - Kyoto's preventative action and Lovelock's apocalypse - who are we to believe?...when I ask if he attributes the conflicting predictions to differences in scientific understanding or personality, he says: "Personality." ___Guardian
Lovelock...appears to have laughed and grinned and smiled his way through this interview. He predicts doom for almost all, and laughs about it.

"Well I'm cheerful!" he says, smiling. "I'm an optimist. It's going to happen."___Source
Lovelock is not the only one of his generation to predict massive human die-off. Modern prophets of doom have been profiting from the apocalypse since the late 1960s and early 1970s, when eco-apocalyptic books became best sellers. Paul Ehrlich, the Club of Rome, Rachel Carson--all these and more preceded Lovelock and Al Gore through the Valley of the Shadow of Human Apocalypse, and made money doing it.

According to these prophets, NYC should be underwater, the population of the Earth should already be below 1 billion from starvation and resource depletion, the entire Earth should be a wasteland, and the new Dark Ages should have long since fallen onto surviving human populations.

Remember Y2K? Sure you do. Unless you are too intent on the prophets making profits from the crises du jour, such as CAGW and Peak Oil? The Ozone hole scare has taken a backseat for now, but it can always be re-cycled, once the climate scare dies down and alternative energy sources predictably come on line one by one.

Or perhaps as Lovelock says, this is "the real thing." The evidence suggests otherwise, and it should be noted that Lovelock is promoting a new book. Should we simply put Lovelock up on the shelf alongside Ehrlich, the Club of Rome, the Y2K thrillers, and Al Gore? Perhaps we will.

Well, I can predict one thing about the future with absolute certainty: He'll be extinct by the year 2100.

I often wonder whether Ehrlich and the other doomsters of the 70s and 80s wished their predictions had come true.

Current Peak Oilers, Population Crashers, and Holy Warmers often give that impression. The Doomier the better as far as they are concerned.

Good post. Ever heard of my polar cities PR project. I sent the images to Lovelock and he told me in an email: "It may very well happen and soon."

I hope not. But it's something to think about as a possible adaptation strategy and in nothing else, as an educational tool. See my news press release here: Not Spam at all.

Interesting idea, Dan. Have you considered the "Equatorial Cities" concept in case of a new ice age?

Given the sun's recent behaviour, it may be something to keep in mind.

Yes, Al Fin, either way, if the EARTH does cool instead of getting warmer, yes, equatorial cities would be good idea, too, that important thing is to prepare, in our minds, adaptation strategies either way. I have no agenda with AGW, but prepare for the future, mentally, first, and then actually make plans. if the Earth cools, then yes, your E cities idea is good, too. and if nothing bad happenbs either way, not too hot , not too cool, then that's best, we can survive and go on. that's my prayer. maybe there is nothing to worry about. but as the Boy SCouts say BE PREPARED, for whatever might be coming. Hope you are right. Hope I am wrong.

by the way, Lovelock, was not promoting a NEW book ,as you said in post. he is writing a new book, but it has not been pubbed yet and he is not promoting it. the reporter who interviwed him was asked \by her editors to interview him as a one time thing, she usually covers other subjects...this was NOT a book promotion interview....his new book won't be out until 2010, -- dannuy

do post one day about my polar cities idea here

Sir James Lovelock’s interview in the Guardian on Saturday — March 1, 3008 — and it is a must-read:

He says he writing a new book now, too. To fill us in on what comes next. I don’t know if I have told anyone here this, but last month I sent some images of my polar cities concept to Dr Lovelock by email, and he wrote back the next day, saying: “Thanks for showing me those images. It may very happen and soon.”

I know Dr Lovelock has not been knighted yet by the Queen and maybe never will be, so he is not actually a “Sir” as I kiddingly wrote above, but he certainly should be honored that way. Sir James Lovelock. Yes. Has a good ring to it.

His interview in Saturday’s Guardian will knock your socks off. NSFW. But a very important interview. Read it and weep. (And then get back to work again, doing what you can to try to mitigate the impacts of climate change on this unsuspecting Earth that has been so kind to us for so many years as to give us a home for many many generations now. Soldier on, all who know that global warming is for real!)

Thanks, Dan.

I did notice that the Guardian interview prominently mentioned Lovelock's most recent book (summer 2007) The Revenge of Gaia. And of course, the article mentions the new book Lovelock is writing. A very busy man indeed.

It is difficult for me not to feel sympathy for people such as the Guardian reporter, who admit their panic over global warming. They feel they should do something--anything!--but Lovelock just seems to say, "no, nothing will help."

I link to the blog "Colonize Antarctica", which has some interesting ideas for surviving full-time in the icy cold of polar regions. Polar cities would require residents who are extremely competent and expert in a variety of skills. I suspect that few modern citizens of affluent, pampered, neotenous western cultures could survive for long there.

Cellphones, iPods, FaceBooks, and the other necessities, sure. But survival in the face of a hostile and unforgiving nature? Not likely.

99% + of people who believe passionately in "global warming" have absolutely no basis within their own cognition for the strength of belief they feel.

All the time I spend trying to help psychotic patients has prepared me well for dealing with CAGW believers. Scientists are not panicking, I wonder why? Lovelock is more a mystic than a scientists, so call him an outlier of sorts.

Insurance company risk analysts are not panicking. They have the most to lose, financially speaking, and are pretty hard-headed about real world risks.

I like the idea of polar cities, but if you're pursuing them for reasons of CAGW, you might want to think of another reason pretty soon.

Hi Al Fin,
Thanks for your very well reasoned post and good points all around. Yeh, Lovelock might be a bit of a mystic. At 88, he's okay. As for your liking my polar cities idea, thanks. And yes, they do not have to be only for CAGW reasons, they could be for when the Earth cools, or nuclear war or terror wars or whatever. They are just adaptation strategies for whatever comes next. As the Boy Scouts like to say, BE PREPARED. Who knows which way the wind will blow? I dunno. But am trying to peer ahead. I have no agenda, one way or the other. Just concern about the future.

We are not on the exact same wavelength or page on this, but I consider you my confrere. Thanks Al Fin. you might also want to see and check out my new website called THE VACLAV KLAUS CLIMATE JOKE AWARDS. AGain, you might not agree with my POV, but pls know that I have a sense of humor about all this, and I hope you do, too. In fact, I know you do. Go look.

part 2

I am using this space, if your moderators will allow me, to announce
to your readers and whoever else surfs on by, the start of the
international ''Vaclav Klaus Climate Joke Awards'' here:

http://climatejokeawards.blogspot.com

They "honor" (sic) people who say stupid things about the climate
crisis. The awards are satire. Then again, maybe they aren't satire.
The page is up now and running and we are accepting nominations via
the comment section throught the year, anytime you spot a good quote,
send it in.

Cheers,

PS: if you want to do a separate blog one day on the awards blog,
please feel free to do so.

Dan,

You seem to have made your mind up about what is happening with Earth's chaotic, everchanging climate. I have not made up my mind. I enjoy being open to new information and hypotheses, in situations where it looks as if important pieces have been left out of the puzzle.

If joking about Vaclav Klaus is of interest to you, fine. He has a country to run--important things to be concerned with. Perhaps you do not, how could I know by the things you have written about?

A good place for you to start would be to demonstrate that you do know what would be necessary to build a viable polar city, and populate it successfully.

Hi Al Fin,

Yup, I am in the same boat as you are -- undecided, and still seeking guidance. are we warming or cooling. Or is this just NAture's way of doing things? We are on the same page....

As for humor, just humor. Pres Klaus is a fine man, a good leader. I am just using his name as a foil, but not making fun of him. I am sure he is a very good man. I respect all people.

As for populating polar cities, I am working on it. Do you have any ideas? Maybe we won't ever need them. That is my hope.

Meanwhile, life is good!

cheers
