Will California Secede from the US and Join the EU?

In many ways, California stands out from the rest of the US. With its coastal Mediterranean climate, and adherence to dieoff.org style energy deprivation policies, California might fit into the EU better than the US, in many ways.
1. The percentage of residents on welfare in the Golden State is now more than triple that of the rest of the U.S. If it reflected the rest of the country, California would have 800,000 fewer people receiving welfare.
2. While caseloads in the rest of the U.S. have dropped over 30% in the past five years, California’s has gone up about 6%.
3. As a result, though it has only about 12% of the total U.S. population, California’s share of the welfare caseload has risen from 22% in 2002 to over 30%.
4. There are more welfare recipients per family in California, and that number has crept upward in the past couple of years, perhaps indicating that California welfare mothers are bearing more children that those in the rest of the U.S.

Governor Schwarzenegger and his state were very fortunate during his first few years in office. The economic growth created by the Bush tax cuts came at just the right time. The state also received some lucky onetime windfalls, including the hundreds of millions of dollars founders and insiders at Google coughed up when they cashed in their stock options.

Unfortunately, it appears that the good fortune enabled the state to avoid serious expenditure reform in welfare, and surely other areas, which Schwarzenegger should have aggressively undertaken when he took office. __Source
California's flight from reason began many decades ago, but for a number of reasons, has not yet fully reaped its sad consequence. Elected representatives such as Barbara Boxer, Nancy Pelosi, and Maxine Waters attest to the depleted mental resources of the California voter. As more industries, more intelligent citizens, and large employers limp their way out of the state for better economic opportunity, the toxic concentration of obliviousness grows ever higher within the golden state.

California can still be a pleasant place to visit. But if you're thinking of starting a business there, you may want to think again.

Mike, I was with you up until the last sentence of your comment.

I suspect that self-brain modification will be pioneered by folks who are driven to the limits. The ones who survive their own experiments will set the new "natural selection" standards for brain performance among the masses.

Nature was easy compared to what the driven brain builders will do given the chance.

I don't think anyone knows how easy it would be to accomplish an increase in human intelligence.

Consider an analogy. "Feral children" raised without language can never achieve natural language skills. To a perhaps slightly lesser degree, the same is true for math and music skills. Once the critical developmental window is passed, it's too late.

And then there are the critical developmental windows we do not know about, the "human" skills we never develop because the proper environmental stimulus was not provided at the right time.

And if we do not understand human intelligence well enough to understand the way to a better intelligence, what is the plan for creating super-human machine intelligence?

Back to your point, I think there are enough people who are obsessed by intelligence, that given the tools they will find a way--or die trying.

Mike, your comment on higher IQ people leaving Socialism is literally laughable. A lot of businessmen and women become so because they are partly failed at school, the are not the arts critics, nor are they scientists, they are those with lower abilities who seek to prove themselves in other ways. Sure 'lower IQ'/poor people (read PEER REVIEWED ie PROVEN psychology books if you believe the two are fundamentally linked) approve of Socialism as it improves their circumstances in exactly the same way the businessman wants to improve theirs, there is no difference in their aims. I think you will find the only people who are actually Socialist are the intellectuals, not merely those who chant it for, personal, but, right wing reasons. And I myself have been accepted into Oxbridge, on differing subjects, have been in mensa and have an IQ in the high 160's according to them, and the logical mistakes people make in today's society are profound, even look at what you believe to be so simply logical coming from 13th 5th etc century prejudices from an uneducated society that are considered by many to be true... Even read Einstein's essay on Socialism, and if you believe that to be nonsense then, from a man who was the king of never making any assumptions and always marching on logic, you are clearly biased to the point of stupidity.
