Does a liberal arts education even make sense anymore? Has college, outside of the hard science & engineering cirricula, lost all purpose?
We have a lot more choices now. As Crush41 pointed out in this comment, the entire internet is spread out in front of us like a huge brain banquet.
University courses that require laboratory work and on the job training (medicine, dentistry, research, etc) are necessary due to the large capital expense involved.
As a medical school graduate, I can tell you that improved computer pedagogy as well as better virtual reality tools, have made it possible to take most of the entire first two years of med school online with a very high speed connection.
With the coming of better haptic tools more realistic teleconferencing, online education may be able to provide the greater part of scientific, technical, and professional training--without the indoctrination.
