Stem Cells in Brain and Marrow

Snowcrash at Biosingularity reports on two new discoveries involving stem cell research.

The first, from KI in Sweden, details the discovery of a method to selectively stimulate the stem cells that produce the dopamine neurons that are lost in Parkinson's Disease. Such selective control is remarkable.

The second from Mount Sinai S of M in New York describes the way in which the sympathetic nervous system affects the performance of the bone marrow in maintaining a supply of hematopoietic stem cells for replacement in the blood.

Read the whole thing.

Stem cells hold many secrets to the maintenance and rejuvenation of human life. But in the end, they--like we--are biological machines that do as they are told. If we between level humans can learn to speak the language of stem cells, and tell them what we want them to do, they will do it.
