Fakegate: What Drove Peter Gleick to Write Fake Heartland Memo

And in the end, after receiving the most boring set of documents from Heartland that one can imagine, Peter Gleick's frustration at being unable to "level the playing field" against the sceptics drove him to create a fake memo, which he distributed to a set of climate alarmist orthodoxy websites to widespread, but anonymous, acclaim.

And then reality set in.
