US Lower 48 Shale Gas Maps

http://www.eia.doe.gov/oil_gas/rpd/shale_gas.jpg

Above you see the US Energy Information Administration's map for shale gas plays in the 48 contiguous US States.

Below, you see T. Boone Pickens' map for shale plays. The circled areas are thought to be particularly rich.

Shale gas and coal bed gas discoveries have shaken international energy markets. It is likely that the shaking has just begun.

Clearly there are shit-loads of natural gas under North America and other continents. It is likely that much of the natural gas being discovered is of abiogenic origin. Thomas Gold last theory before his death was the abiogenic origin of natural gas and petroleum. Al though he is probably wrong about the petroleum, he is most certainly correct about natural gas.

Most natural gas fields yield Helium gas. Helium, being the noble gas, does not react in any biochemical reaction at all. It cannot be of biological origin. Also, the planets and other bodies of the solar system is chalk full of Methane.

Methane has recently been discovered on Mars, meaning that either there is (current) life on Mars or that Thomas Gold is correct with regards to the abiogenic origin of natural gas.

I bet on Thomas Gold.
