After the Breakdown

The interesting thing about these images of a post-apocalyptic future, is how recognisable the cities remain. In the event of a complete breakdown of modern civilisation, how long could we expect these structures to remain standing?

According to The World Without Us and Life After People, many of humanity's best-known manmade landmarks would experience severe degradation after only a few decades.
It is the natural course of events for things to fall apart. That is true for physical structures, for biological organisms, and for dynamic processes such as solar systems, stars, galaxies, and universes. Why should humans expect their pitiful cities to last forever?
