Should Prostitution Be Legalised to Help Coeds Pay for A College Education?

This article is cross-posted from Al Fin, You Sexy Thing! blog

Making ends meet while going to college can be very difficult for young girls, who have often not lived away from home before going to university. California coeds have long discovered the working opportunities available in and around Nevada communities such as Las Vegas and Reno. But in parts of the world where prostitution is less accepted, college girls who utilise their innate assets for raising tuition money are often hassled by law enforcement -- as well as by criminal gangs and pimps.

College aged girls are at the optimum stage of physical development for using their natural charms to entice salary men to part with their money. And as long as the girls use the money to better themselves, who can argue with their choice?

"Over the past few years, the number of college students using our site has exploded," says Brandon Wade, the 41-year-old founder of Seeking Arrangement. Of the site's approximately 800,000 members, Wade estimates that 35 percent are students. "College students are one of the biggest segments of our sugar babies and the numbers are growing all the time." _HP

Several internet sites exist to match college girls with older men with money.

At least one university president is known to have run a large prostitution ring, no doubt using some of his university connections to recruit girls. University professors have been known to recruit girls from their classes to work as strippers and exotic dancers.

The main obstacle to developing this opportunity more widely for college girls, appears to be the legal difficulties. As long as college girls have to operate outside the law to pay for school, they must risk losing everything they have worked so hard for.

If prostitution were legalised, girls could organise for security and protection from all types of predators -- on both sides of the law.

Legal status might also help prevent more girls from falling prey to drug abuse and addiction -- one of the many hazards of the occupation.

There is no denying the allure which college aged girls hold for men of all ages.
Educated, debt-ridden 20-somethings happen to be an age demographic that intersects nicely with Jack's preferences. "I only go out with girls 25 and under," says Jack, whose thick head of white hair and bushy eyebrows form a halo around a red, flushed face. "But I can't walk into a bar and go up to a 25-year-old. They'd think I'm a pervert. So, this is how I go about meeting them."

As he continues, he repeatedly glances over his shoulder to make sure no one is listening.

"Most of these young women have debt from school," says Jack, who finds most young women also carry an average of $8,000 in credit-card debt. "I guess I like the college girls more because I think of their student debt as good debt. At least it seems like I'm helping them out, like I'm helping them to get a better life." _HP

College girls simply have what most men want -- youth, vitality, naivete, and that certain je ne sais quoi, which everyone knows what it is.

We all know that this kind of thing has gone on for ages. In modern times, when US college student debt is over $1 trillion dollars, we all know that those who can find a way to get out from under all that debt will tend to use it -- if they think they can come out unscathed on the other side.

Polite societies have long made activities such as prostitution and gambling illegal. But doing so only seems to drive these activities further underground, where they become the province of criminal -- often violent criminal -- elements.

Of course, the philosophy that everyone should go to college is more than a little insane. But if society is willing to live with that little fiction -- to the tune of $1 trillion in college loan debt -- perhaps society might need to learn to live with a bit of blunt reality in terms of the available choices for paying the debt.

Should society be willing to face that reality, it might make things safer for everyone.

  1. I'm gob smacked reading this blog post. How about the premise that just because you can doesn't make it right? Just because you can doesn't make it moral? How sad that you condone young females using their 'talents' to make money because they're still too stupid, gullible and naive to know better and then hide behind the mantra that it would be safer for them if it were legalised to ply their trade. I understand that there will always be prostitution, but surely these educated girls can find other ways to pay off their debt without losing their soul? And another thing, how would you suggest the young men pay off their college debt? Should they also be encouraged to rent their bottoms to the nearest pervert? Human decency, morals and personal responsibility should be the order of the day, not the out layer. And the ultimate question for you: if you had a daughter, would you be happy for her to do as you suggest in this post?

Welcome to Alfin's blog. He doesn't employ the /sarc tag. In the next post, he may even advocate eating the poor.

  3. Prostitution should be legal. It is a shame that "moral" busybodies feel justified sending women and men to prisons for victimless acts. By the way, I get so tired of prudes pretending like there are not women out there who, by there nature, are cut out for this sort of work. Not all women are virginal mother types. The people with the problem are not men like Jack being sexually fed or the young girls doing such good deeds for money. The ones with the problem are not those engaging in this but the open sex hating low lives who complain about this. If I had a daughter and this is what she wanted, I would want her to have state protection instead of state harassment and potential danger.

  4. Also, we had legal prostitution throughout much of the West before the "Progressive" Era. Many women, trying to use "morality" as a weapon to have a monopoly on who was having sex or not, supported the criminalization of prostitution. They were joined by sex hating religious fanatics of the male sex (not really traditionalists but right wing progressives). A great many opponents of legal prostitution try to misrepresent themselves as traditionalists. Throughout much of Western history, prostitution was legal. The anti-prostitution people are not traditionalists, they are utopians who would like to hold men and women to an unnatural standard to satisfy their own fantasies of what is good and proper.

  5. Lime Lite: Let me assure you that the purpose of the Al Fin blog is neither to persuade nor to preach. The Al Fin blog is designed to provoke thought in the minds of those who might be so inclined.

There is a good deal of designed offensiveness built into many blog articles here. If persons who should not be reading this blog are offended often enough, they are likely to choose on their own to seek greener pastures for their grazing.

It is the brave and resilient soul indeed who persists in reading Al Fin blog articles, with the intent of comprehending the underlying theme which ties the seemingly scattergun collection together.

  6. Consenting adults ought to be able to enter into any contract they choose.

  7. I have a beautiful 20-something daughter in college right now and the thought of this makes this prude ill.

The problem is the outrageous cost of college, it's off the charts. The university/college enterprise system is a massive wealth transfer from poor college students (and/or their parents) to a bloated, bureaucratic, politicized retirement plan for administrators and professors. Like the public schools being built these days these places are palaces - way beyond square brick buildings of my generation and way beyond what is needed to actually teach and instruct the next generation.

For the girls to (have to) resort to prostitution is a crying shame. And what are the boys supposed to do? The same?

  8. I could never understand why a girl giving sex for free is liberated and a girl giving sex for money is exploited.

  9. Craig: I knew I could count on you to focus on the crux of the matter. The article was not so much about prostitution as it was about the outrageous cost of a corrupt system of higher education, and the profound and largely hidden costs to society at large which this university bubble will exact.

Of course, being something of a libertarian, I try to promote the liberalisation of laws against victimless crimes as often as possible.

Of course, if these college working girls want to survive economically they will have to organise for their own protection. Otherwise, the over-supply of prostitutes when hundreds of thousands of young girls suddenly offer their services, is going to overwhelm the market. Prices could plummet. And that would defeat the entire purpose of the exercise.

Smart operators always guard against oversupply.

If these girls decide to work in the prostitution market they are able to obtain higher prices than the common prostitute on the street.

Economics teach a lower price will not reduce the demand, it usually raise the demand for goods and services.

  11. I believe some girls, with the right working parts - in their brain pan - could make this work and not be eternally damaged, just as some could smoke a little pot or imbibe the Wild Turkey whiskey on the weekends and not let it destroy them, but we all know people who didn't. I would fear for the mental well-being of these girls in the long run.

  12. Mirco: True, but if prices fall too low, many providers will be forced out of the market.

Craig: Yes, unfortunately, our society does a horrible job of giving children a strong and independent core self. That is something which The Dangerous Child Method of early childhood education and child raising is meant to counteract -- at least for the fortunate few whose parents are open-minded enough to allow them to benefit.
