Exactly As Fast As A Speeding Bullet

From "Lord of War", the graphic life story of a rifle round. Signifying nothing so much as the fleeting and capricious nature of life in so many parts of the world.

I'm interested to hear what you think about the new artificial heart which create a continuous flow of blood, rather than a pulse of blood.

It seems to me this lack of a pulse is not good for the veins. As we know, muscle and bone gain stength with stress. I would imagine this is true of all parts of the body, including the vascular system.

Without a pulse, I am inclined to believe this man's vascular system will deteriorate quickly.

Yes, most people who have been without a pulse for any appreciable period of time, have tended to suffer for it.

Good joke, but I'm serious. Maybe you don't know the story I'm talking about?

Seriously, what's your opinion?

In fact, one of the many problems with conventional heart-lung bypass pumps for open heart surgery, is the lack of a pulse.

Sitting at the anesthesia machine watching the arterial monitor for these cases is a bit unnerving, due to the lack of a pulse where there normally is one. Anesthesiologists have an instinctive dislike for flat lines on the monitors.

Of course, a pulse of blood through the aortic valve is a bit like a jackhammer to the arteries, especially at and beyond the bifurcations. So with hypertension, a strong pulse can be too much of a good thing.

It may be some time before the consequences of longterm pulseless circulation of blood are known. I haven't looked at the animal studies to know how much experience they have.

Well, thanks for being honest.

I am only going from what little knowledge I have in the muscular and skeletal aspect of the debate.

I think this heart without a pusle is very worrisome.
